Abstract

In ColonCancerCheck, Ontario's organized colorectal cancer (CRC) screening program, almost 25% of persons with a positive guaiac fecal occult blood test (gFOBT) fail to have follow-up colonoscopy. Colonoscopy in the 5 years prior to the abnormal gFOBT is associated with failure to have follow-up; the more recent the colonoscopy, the stronger the association with failure to follow-up. It is unclear whether colonoscopy should be repeated in this population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of CRC among 1) those who are gFOBT positive by recency of prior colonoscopy and 2) those undergoing primary screening colonoscopy.
