Abstract
The compounds MPuO2XO4·yH2O and M′(PuO2XO4)2·zH2O (X ≡ P, As; M ≡ H+, K+, Rb+, NH44; M' ≡ Ca2+, Sr2+) were prepared and identified by X-ray crystallographic comparison with the corresponding uranium and neptunium compounds. The hydrogen compounds HPuO2PO4· yH2O and HPuO2AsO4·2 − 3H2O were obtained by treating PuO3· 2H2O with aqueous solutions of H3PO4 and H3AsO4 respectively. KPuO2PO4· yH2O and NH4PuO2PO4·yH2O were prepared by precipitation from aqueous Pu(VI) solutions in weak HNO3 with K2HPO4 and (NH4)2HPO4 respectively. The arsenates were prepared by exchange of H+ in the solid hydrogen compounds suspended in solutions of the respective alkali and alkaline earth chlorides. The role of the plutonyl phosphate compounds in the formation of non-extractable plutonium in the PUREX process is discussed.
