Abstract

AbstractAs we continue to defend our nations, the increased use of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) technology in military, infrastructure and other systems necessitates different approaches to address evolving risks and opportunities. COTS technologies have become far more capable over the last 10 years and that trend shows no sign of slowing. In fact, the commercial world is often on the cutting edge as companies vie to win market share. Nations and customers have recognized this trend and, with a desire to capitalize on it (cost and time), are now often specifying “maximum use of COTS” in many systems. This increasing specification and use of COTS technology will increase the challenges in protecting our nations, as well as afford us new opportunities for exploitation and defense.
