Abstract

This chapter focuses on Fellomyces genus and its member species. The cells of this genus are spherical to ellipsoidal and produce one or more stalks, each giving rise to a single conidium. The conidium is freed without forceful ejection at the distal end of the stalk. The member species of this genus are Fellomyces fuzhouensis, Fellomyces horouitziae, Fellomyces penicillatus, and Fellomyces polyborus. The cells of Fellomyces fuzhouensis, after undergoing growth in malt extract for three days at 25–30° C, appear as spheroidal, ovoidal, or sometimes irregularly shaped. The cells of Fellomyces horovitziae, after undergoing growth in malt extract for three days at 25° C, appear as globose to ovoidal, reproduce by enteroblastic budding, or by forming conidia on stalks. A sediment, ring, pellicle, and islets are formed. After four weeks at 25° C, a sediment, ring, and a creeping pellicle are observed. After five days of growth on 5% malt extract agar at 25° C, the cells of Fellomyces horovitziae appear as globose, ellipsoidal to ovoidal, and occasionally asymmetric.
