Abstract

Well-defined stage-1 nickel chloride-graphite intercalation compounds have been synthesized starting with stage-1 cadmium chloride-GIC and proceeding with a displacement reaction. Analysis of the samples gives the composition C5.5Ni Cd0.01Cl2.13 and from X-ray diffraction di = 933 pm. ESR measurements at X-band have been carried out on single crystals, as well as magnetization measurements with a SQUID magnetometer. The data are typical of a classical antiferromagnetic behavior (TN = 21 K), comparable to that of pristine NiCl2 with lowered AF interactions and showing some peculiarities due to the presence of islands.
