Abstract

Many medical conditions exist for which access to immediate treatment is essential in achieving favorable outcomes. A large proportion of the deaths per year in low- and middle-income countries are due to conditions potentially treatable with emergency care. In such countries, ensuring adequate access to health care is especially important. The objective of the present work was to use a geographical information system (GIS) approach to characterize regional health disparities in Brazil by analyzing (1) the geospatial distribution of emergency care sensitive conditions (ECSCs) and (2) timely access to emergency medical care.
