Abstract

This chapter discusses about the various methods of sterilization. An article is sterile after being through a sterilizing process. This means it has been cleaned, packed, labeled, dated, sterilized, and stored until it is required for use at the operation site. The important fact to remember is that there is only one way to carry out this sterilization process and that is the correct way. There is no such state as nearly sterile or almost sterile. This sterilizing process may take place outside the hospital in a Central Sterile Supply Department, in a hospital, or maybe in the theatre area. Any discrepancy regarding packaging, date, or identification should be reported immediately. Some articles cannot be sterilized and can only be disinfected. Some hospitals have a Central Sterile Department, others have to carry out many sterilization methods in the theatre area. A basic knowledge of the method of sterilizing each article used in the operating theatre is essential for the nurse even though it may not be her duty to carry out the sterilizing process.
