Abstract

The number of developed expert systems in various areas of science and engineering is immense. Expert systems are predictive systems utilizing available knowledge and personal experiences to make statements about certain phenomenon or decisions about certain action. One of the objectives of an envisaged expert system dealing with the failure analysis of pipes would be the clarification and elucidation of the causes of failure. All expert systems are founded on a so-called knowledge base, which contains the available knowledge in the related field. The knowledge base forms the core of the automated expert system programs. The knowledge base of expert systems for plastic pipes contains the experience of many experts in the area of piping systems and their failure investigation. An expert system called Expert System for Failure Analysis of Pipes (EFAP), addresses the above-mentioned objectives. It deals with the explanation of failure causes and aims at tracing these causes to the environmental factors as well as the life stages of a specific pipeline. This chapter outlines the essentials of this expert system. This chapter outlines the core program of this system constituting the knowledge base.
