Abstract

Chemical peels are an increasingly popular cosmetic procedure performed in men. The approach to chemical peels in men includes consideration of intrinsic and extrinsic skin variables that affect various aspects of the peeling process. Owing to the increased sebaceous quality of the male skin and thicker dermis, men, in general, may require a greater number of treatments, larger volumes of peeling agent, more aggressive degreasing and peel application, and/or higher concentration of peeling agent to achieve optimal results. Patient selection is of utmost importance, because poor photoprotective behavior and nonadherence to prepeel and postpeel regimens could jeopardize clinical outcomes. Facility in performing chemical peels and understanding gender-specific nuances of this technique may be well rewarded in today’s growing aesthetic market.
