Abstract

This chapter discusses the different sectors of industry, and special emphasis is given to the manufacturing industry in its role as a producer of wealth. The structure of a typical company is examined and the relationship between management and unions is explored. The first important step in the process was the identification of a need or want. The satisfaction of that need or want is the objective of technology, and industry is the means of meeting that objective. There are two methods of production: direct and indirect production. When one provides his or her own goods and services, he or she is involved in direct production. When one cooperate s with others in the provision of their as well as others goods and services, he or she is involved in indirect production. Indirect production is much more efficient. Production falls into three categories: primary, secondary, and tertiary production. The third type of production, tertiary production, is concerned with the production of services. These break down into commercial services and personal services.
