Abstract

Human development is a complex interplay between biology, psychology, and society. Any discussion that focuses on talented/gifted individual development inevitably addresses the challenges experienced by creatively gifted people and those that support their development. Talented children tend to develop outside the parameters of the typical stages of development. Their unique talents set up a cascade of uneven developmental landmarks; consequently it is more difficult to predict developmental sequencing and more challenging to offer supportive developmental environments. At a very early stage of development talented children begin to establish a sense of identity that is tied to their domain-specific interests. Musicians, dancers, and actors claim that their early interests were frequently directed toward career aspirations; with early support these interests can be reinforced. This chapter discusses development into early adulthood, following Erikson’s psychosocial developmental stages.
