Abstract

In this chapter, we present the neutron scatter by the atomic electric field. The first topic covered is the spin–orbit electric field scatter of neutrons by the atomic electric field. The electric field of the nucleus and electron cloud appears as a magnetic field in the neutron rest frame and interacts with the neutron magnetic dipole moment. Covered next is the Foldy interaction of the neutron with the atomic electric field. The Foldy interaction arises due to the slight separation of the positive and negative charge distributions within the charge-neutral neutron. The Foldy interaction is the electrostatic interaction between the nuclei and atomic electrons with the two electric-charge components of the charge-neutral neutron. Finally, the partial differential cross section for the scatter of neutrons from a non-Bravais lattice crystal, which accounts for the neutron spin and nuclear spin as well as scatter of the neutron by the atomic electric fields, is derived.
