Abstract

Cognitive work analysis (CWA) is an effective approach for describing the forces that shape human cognitive work in complex real-time systems. It is an approach to cognitive engineering that helps analysts find ways to support the human operator in unexpected situations where the operator will have to behave adaptively. Ecological interface design (EID) is one of the significant applications of CWA. CWA draws strongly upon work psychology, ecological psychology, and systems thinking. EID is a set of principles to guide interface design that emerges from the part of CWA that is particularly strongly influenced by ecological psychology. CWA applies best to physical or engineered work domains rather than social or intentional domains where the work domain consists of social practices and conventions such as command and control.
