Abstract
This chapter reviews the recent advances in lithic analysis to provide background information on the decisions that were made in creating the classification systems used by the Cannon Reservoir Human Ecology Project. It discusses the lithic analysis systems employed. Any discussion of lithic analysis systems must take into account rapid changes in lithic studies in recent years—changes in both the basic assumptions that serve to ground lithic analysis as well as changes in analytical techniques. The expansion of lithic research and ethno-archeological studies has led to the revision of many previously held assumptions about technological and functional variability in stone artifact assemblages. There are a number of considerations that must be taken into account while assessing the Cannon Project lithic analysis systems.
