Abstract

Anthracene reacts with benzocyclobutene at 300° to give 9,10-dihydro-9,10- o-xylylene-anthracene (I). With benzocyclobutadiene in situ in boiling ethanol a Diels-Alder adduct (II) is obtained. The reaction of anthracene with indene at 280° affords the known 1,2-adduct (IV), to which convincing evidences of the structure have been given.
