Abstract

Previous measurements of left-right asymmetry in human skin potential(SP), as a correlate of chronic pain,1 found signature shifts that correlated with subject’s pain self-reports (on 0-10 VAS scale). This earlier data had been gathered using a standard strip chart recorder, which is not portable. Some subjects have pain that manifests solely with ambulation, and for them SP cannot be meaningfully measured using the prior method. Now a new, hand-held digital measurement device, powered by a 9V battery, allows the investigator to walk beside the subject and record SP shifts while the subject reports changing pain levels during the walk.
