Abstract

SummaryNicotiana gossei is the preferred species of Nicotiana used for chewing by native Australians. It was previously a widely traded commodity. We here describe and illustrate this formerly economically important species from plants collected in the Northern Territory of Australia and cultivated at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Its ecology, traditional uses, cytology and cultivation are discussed.
