Abstract

Lifestyle intervention programs (LIPs) are effective in reducing cardiometabolic risk in clinical trials, but real world implementation is often limited by time constraints on physician-patient in clinic counseling. We report preliminary results from a telehealth LIP that provides culturally tailored lifestyle recommendations in Nutrition, Exercise, Sleep and Stress reduction for high-risk South Asians. Methods: The Stanford South Asian Translational Heart Initiative introduced a telehealth LIP that delivers care via video visits in November 2017. Patients ages 20-60 were enrolled and compared to age-matched traditional in-person clinic patients. Both arms included a comprehensive cardiometabolic risk assessment and personalized treatment plan focused on aggressive risk reduction, with a set of 3 cardiologist and 3 dietitian/diabetes educator visits to be completed in 6 months. Individualized counselling was provided in nutrition, role of physical activity and inactivity, sleep hygiene and stress reduction. Results: Out of 120 enrollees, 37 have the completed program. Telehealth LIP was associated with salutary changes in lifestyle including decreased prolonged sitting time (32/37 87%) and cardiometabolic markers. Conclusion: The addition of 3 telehealth LIP sessions to a preventive cardiology clinic produces significant improvements in lifestyle behaviors and cardiometabolic risk. Disclosure V.
