Abstract

The reliable induction of tolerance to transplanted organs is a major goal in transplantation research to obviate chronic anti-rejection therapy. Lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) has been identified as one likely component of the T-cell activation process that may be interrupted to lead to graft tolerance without the negative side effects of non-specific immunosuppression. NKT-cells restricted by non-classical class I CD1 molecule have been implicated in peripheral tolerance induction.
