Abstract

The temperature dependence of both the phason-induced 87 Rb 1 2 →- 1 2 rotating-frame spin-lattice relaxation time ( T 1ϱ) and the laboratory frame relaxation time ( T 1) was measured in the incommensurate phase of Rb 2ZnCl 4. The observed ratio T 1/ T 1ϱ≅1.6 is much smaller than that predicted for the case of a gapless phason ( T 1/ T 1 ϱ =√ ω L / ω 1≅86), thereby demonstrating the presence of a phason gap in this system. The phason gap was estimated to be 50 GHz, in agreement with other measurements.
