Abstract

Pressure-regulated automatic carbon dioxide (CO2) insufflation has been a standard technique in laparoscopy, yet not in gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. We have developed a simple and inexpensive system to provide constant pressure environment in the GI tract, using currently available flexible GI endoscopes and surgical insufflators. The aims were to assess feasibility and safety of this new modality named “steady pressure automatically controlled endoscopy (SPACE)”, and to evaluate its potential effectiveness for esophageal/gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).
