Abstract

Since the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) Pain Management Assessment Standards were officially implemented at our institution in January 2001, the number of reported opioid related adverse drug reactions have risen. Previously published studies have shown that since 2001 there has been a rise in the number of opioid related events in hospitalized patients, however, other studies have shown that there has not. Therefore, our goal of this evaluation was to investigate whether the JCAHO Pain Management Assessment Standards were the primary cause of the rise in reported opioid related adverse drug reactions at our institution, or if there were other identifiable causes that may be more responsible for this change.
