Abstract

To compare patient factors in those who suffer periprocedural stroke at the time of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), with a view to identifying patients who may benefit from provisional cerebral protection device use. We reviewed 523 patients who underwent TAVI at a single centre between 2008 and 2019. All statistics were performed in SPSS. 22 (4.2%) had radiologically-proven cerebrovascular accident associated with their TAVI procedure. In 27 valve-in-valve procedures in this cohort, there was no periprocedural stroke events. Table 1 describes the patient characteristics that were associated with increased risk of stroke. Logistic regression was performed to generate odds ratio (OR). There was a trend to increase risk associated with CKD and BMI>30 patients although these results did not reach statistical significance. There was a trend towards increased risk of periprocedural stroke in patients undergoing TAVI who had a BMI>30 and chronic kidney disease. These patients may benefit from the consideration of a cerebral protection device.Table 1Odds ratios of patient characteristics associated with periprocedural stroke at the time of TAVI.Stroke (n=22)All others (n=497)ORP valuePatient characteristicsAge at TAVI (years)82.783.41.010.801Female13 (59%)214 (42.7%)1.50.476BMI > 309 (40.1%)89 17.9%)3.30.06Hypertension12 (54.5%)248 (50.4%)1.20.811Diabetes6 (27.3%)112 (22.8%)1.10.863Chronic kidney disease (CKD)5 (22.7%)70 (14.2%)2.30.227Dialysis1 (4.5%)7 (1.4%)3.40.381PAD2 (9.1%)19 (3.8%)1.80.614 Open table in a new tab
