Abstract
Salivary gland tumors have varicolored histologic pictures, and we have difficulties in diagnosing them even by permanent preparations as well as intraoperative frozen section diagnosis. Various adjuvant preoperative diagnostic methods developed recently can not attain satisfactory results. We mainly studied the preoperative diagnosis in 82 resected cases of salivary gland tumors.Of the 82 cases sialography was performed in 27, but any available informations could be hardly obtained. Recently it becomes uncommon to be used. Ultrasonography was carried out in 48 cases, with the correct diagnosing rate of 81%. However, it lacks in high sensitivity, where it may leave room for further discussion. Needle aspiration cytology performed in 51 cases resulted in the correct diagnosing rate of 90%. It is a convenient and highly reliable method, but demands careful attentions for its performance. Intraoperative frozen section diagnosis was done in 31 cases and misdiagnosis was made in 5 of them, namely, the correct diagnosing rate was 84%. More correct diagnosis is expected. It can be said that every method described above can not yield satisfactory results. Further efforts in the diagnosis of the disease well be actively contunued.
