Abstract

In the article the performance of tunnel boring machines (TBM) in adverse ground conditions is discussed in order to appreciate the problems encountered and delays incurred. Case histories are used to highlight critical tunnelling situations and how these affected progress rates. All the machines discussed are in the 3-5 M diameter range and use non-insert disc cutters. Characteristics of machine design are discussed and illustrated. Data from 40 fault zones selected from case histories are used to illustrate that adverse tunnelling situations are often man-made and can be avoided by a knowledge of geological conditions and appropriate machine characteristics. An essential requirement in TBM design is considered to be the inclusion of good access and facilities for basic tunnelling operations in adverse ground conditions.
