Abstract

Endogenous Digitalis-like factors (EDLF) inhibit sodium pump Na+/K+-ATPase activity. Maternal EDLF are increased in women with preeclampsia (PE). Studies have shown that Digoxin Immune Fab (DIF) therapy is beneficial in cases of PE. In women with severe PE, DIF administration appears to improve both utero-placental blood flow and renal function. Increased microvascular permeability is an underlying pathophysiology in PE. This study was undertaken to test if DIF could protect endothelial cells (ECs) from EDLF-induced endothelial barrier dysfunction.
