Abstract

Self-compacting concrete workability is usually ensured by the addition of superplasticizers in the mixture. The effects of some properties of superplasticizers have been investigated by many researchers. This chapter provides an overview of the action mechanisms of superplasticizers in order to understand how these adsorb onto particle surfaces, with a selective review of the four types of superplasticizers. The influence of superplasticizers on cement paste, and on rheological and mechanical properties of self-compacting concrete, are also discussed. Moreover, the effect of dry extract of superplasticizer admixture on the behavior of concrete is included.
