Abstract
This chapter discusses the introduction and the main text of the longer Farāmarznāme separately. Although the two versions of the introduction disagree in wording, they have the same intention. They both consist of a preamble to Farāmarz's Indian campaign and they are both based on the Shāhnāme episode KM entitles dāstān-e ʿarẓ kardan-e keykhosrow, 'the story of Key Khosrow's review'. The main narrative of the longer Farāmarznāme technically begins with the verse stating that Farāmarz travels to Khargāh. Besides the direct links to Ferdowsi's poem, the story of the longer Farāmarznāme contains a number of more indirect references, consisting of narratives that are reminiscent of certain Shāhnāme episodes. These episodes are most notably related to Farāmarz's father and grandfather, Rostam and Zāl. But some of them also involve Shāhnāme princes, such as Fereydun's three sons, Siyāwakhsh, and Esfandiyār.Keywords: Farāmarznāme; Farāmarz's Indian campaign; Ferdowsi's poem; Shāhnāme
