Abstract

Aims: Early detection and prevention of long-term complications by maintaining good metabolic control and avoiding severe hypoglycaemia remain the key goals of paediatric diabetes management. The natural progression of diabetic neuropathy in children has been less extensively investigated because of challenges in its assessment. The aim of present study was to deploy corneal confocal micros copy in a cohort of children with T1DM to establish its utility in identifying early nerve damage. Methods: 40 children with T1DM and 20 aged-matched control subjects underwent corneal confocal microscopy to assess corneal nerve parameters including nerve fibre density (NFD), nerve branch density (NBD) and nerve fibre length (NFL).
