Abstract

There are many drivers for change in the coatings industry, with the most prominent targeting more environmentally friendly technologies and greater levels of functionality. This chapter reviews research aimed at increasing the lifetime and performance of current coating systems by using self-healing mechanisms that address both environmental and functionality objectives. The chapter begins with a general review of current trends and objectives, discusses some practical considerations, and follows with a summary of some of the major metrics used in self-healing coating. It then examines extrinsic and intrinsic healing mechanisms for the polymer network. A summary of anodic and cathodic inhibition corrosion mechanisms is then reviewed. This leads into developments in the area of mixed inhibitors and their delivery systems. The summary looks at the prospects for further self-healing research in the coatings area.
