Abstract

The construction of a road embankment over soft alluvial clay is described. After the completion of the first of the two construction lifts cracks were observed on the surface of the pulverized fuel ash fill. The cracking was attributed to differential movements caused by a large variation in the depth of the alluvial clay across the width of the embankment. A crushed limestone rockfill was used to complete the embankment. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 286603. (Author/TRRL)
