Abstract

PURPOSE: The purpose o f this s tudy was t o investigate the effect o f 8-week t herapeutic horseb ack riding on physical fitness in severe intellectual disabled men.
METHODS: 8 severe intellectual disabled men were conducted the therapeutic horseback riding for 8 weeks. In this study, the data of physical fitness (muscular strength, isokinetic muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition, cardiorespiratory endurance, and balance) were collected before and after the treatment. In addition, since subjects were only 8 people, the Wilcoxon signed rank test was performed. Also, the effect size (Cohen’s d) was calculated in order to review difference degree of average value, and the statistically significant level was set as .05.
RESULTS: After conducting horseback riding program, there was no significant difference before and after except the flexibility (P<.05).
CONCLUSIONS: We did not find big changes because rehabilitative horseback riding program for 8 weeks was comparably short in intensity and period, but it is considered that it will acquire sufficiently meaningful result in power change at follow-up study, if things such as exercise period, intensity, sample size, and others are adjusted.
