Abstract

The 7th International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant (ICMGP) was held from 28th of June to 2nd of July 2004 in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, where the Idrija mercury mine is located. The mercury mine is no longer in operation and the mine shafts are being closed in order to avoid any further releases of mercury to the environment. A professional organization of the Conference was provided by the Jo~ef Stefan Institute, with Dr. Milena Horvat as Chairperson. Besides the aim of the conference of exchanging scientific developments, reporting of scientific breakthroughs, and promoting a sound scientific understanding of the distribution, pathways and effects of mercury on our society and the environment, the scientific programme of the 7th ICMGP comprised 4 parallel sessions, poster sessions and round table discussions centred around the following four components of the worldwide mercury problematics:
