Abstract

Conversion disorders present in inpatient pediatric settings, and although uncommon, they often are debilitating for patients and families. There currently is limited evidence-based standardization of the evaluation and management of conversion disorders on inpatient medical units, which can lead to significant angst among the medical providers and lead to requests from medical providers to have patients transferred from medical to mental health care settings. There also is concern expressed from inpatient pediatrics teams about how early psychiatry should be involved and how to discuss diagnosis and engage in disposition planning.
