Abstract

Tregulatory cells control the cytotoxic T cell (Tc) response and tolerance to the fetus and are thought to be involved in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. We have shown that severe preeclampsia is associated with increased decidual Tc cells, and that early, but not late-onset, severe preeclampsia is associated with a decreased proportion of Tregulatory cells in decidua and elevated sFlt expression in syncytiotrophoblast. Since maternal Tc cells may attack fetal-derived trophoblasts, we hypothesized that chorionic trophoblast apoptosis would differ in term normal pregnancies, late-onset severe preeclampsia, and early-onset severe preeclampsia.
