Abstract

vors and deaths. Results: ECMO indications were: (1) cardiopulmonary bypass weaning failure (20 patients), (2) cardiac arrest (26 patients), and (3) other cardiogenic shock (24 patients). Mean duration on ECMO support was 197.8 195.3 hours. ECMO was established by femoro-femoral cannulation in 46 patients (65.7%). Serum lactate and inotropy decreased within the first post-implantation day. 30-day survival was 28.6%. Hospital discharge survival was 25.7%, including a 26.9% (7/26 patients) survival in the cardiac arrest patient group. Patients who died were older than the survivors (59.7 versus 51.1 years; p 0.046). Overall, 37 patients (51.4%) were weaned to recovery, had long-term circulatory support or were transplanted (Figure 1). The most common cause of death was multiorgan failure (22 patients). The most frequent device-related adverse event was oxygenator failure, occurring 6 times. Pump failure occurred twice.
