Abstract

Lidocaine infusions produce analgesia in a variety of pain conditions. Systemic lidocaine may have distinct effects on nerve conduction and ectopic discharges, blocking the ectopic discharges without blocking nerve conduction.1 Others hypothesize that systemic lidocaine exerts its anti-allodynic effect via central mechanisms independent of suppression of ectopic discharges. We hypothesized that affective changes may be responsible for some of systemic lidocaine’s apparent analgesic activity. No detailed studies on the affective effects of lidocaine, or their interplay with lidocaine’s analgesic effects have been previously reported.
