Abstract The authors present 7500 - 9300 Å spectra, at 30 km s-1 resolution, of the luminous emission-line star MWC 349A. At least 160 spectral lines are detected, including several strong Fe II lines excited by fluorescence with Lyα. The variety of line profiles and excitation requirements imply several distinct emission regions in the circumstellar envelope, ranging from high-density (≥ 1010 cm-3) and neutral to low-density (≤ 106 cm-3) and ionized. The dynamics inferred for these regions support the rotating disk plus bipolar wind model proposed for this source by Hamann and Simon in 1986.
