Abstract

The tensile strength and Young's modulus of carbon nano-tube (CNT)are higher than conventional carbon fibers. Plastics filled with CNT are expected as structural materials with high specific strength and elastic modulus. Vapor-grown carbon fiber (VGCF) is a kind of nano-scale carbon fibers. In order to evaluate the potential of VGCF composites, we fabricated VGCF/epoxy composites and measured the mechanical and electrical properties. Epoxy was filled with various volume fraction of VGCF. Mechanical properties such as Young's modulus and tensile strength, electrical properties, and thermal propaties are measured for the several methods. As a result, it is shown that the VGCF/epoxy composite shows good electrical conductivity. Further investigation is required as mechanical reinforcement.
