Abstract

POEM is a novel endoscopic treatment for achalasia and other spastic esophageal disorders (SED). It requires a demanding skill set that involves both advanced endoscopic skills and knowledge of surgical anatomy and complication management. Most published data comes from procedures performed by surgeons in operating rooms. The safety, efficacy, and learning curve of POEM when performed by gastroenterologists in the endoscopy unit are currently unknown.
