Abstract

Background: Neutrophils play an important role in the innate immune response to invading microorganisms. An exaggerated inflammatory response leads to the generation of cytokines and toxic radicals that can be injurious to the host. In sepsis and hemorrhagic shock, hypertonic saline (HS) and Pentoxifylline (PTX), a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, have been shown to decrease neutrophil oxidative burst and proinflammatory mediator synthesis alone, and synergistically when given in combination (HSPTX).
