Abstract

This study was conducted to obtain basic data concerning the effect that the difference in Young's Moduli between the surface layer and the substrate has on the fatigue strength. For this purpose, the fatigue test was conducted for the specimens where thin plates of pure titanium were bonded to both sides of a pure iron plate. To form a strong interface, the joining was made by heating the specimen where thin copper sheet was inserted between the pure iron and pure titanium plates under pressing by supports. The fatigue curve was compared with those of pure titanium and pure iron. The results showed that the fatigue strength of the bonded specimen is higher than that of the substrate. This increase in the fatigue strength was explained from the viewpoints of the real stress applied to the surface layer.
