Abstract

Si_3N_4/SiC composite ceramics were sintered adding 8wt.% Y_2O_3 as a sintering additive. A pre-crack of 100μm in surface length was introduced on the tensile surface of the specimens using a Vickers hardness indenter. The pre-crack was healed under cyclic stress of 210MPa at healing temperatures between 900℃ and 1200℃. Bending strength of the crack-healed specimen at each crack-healing temperature showed almost same value as the smooth specimen at room temperature. Moreover, the crack-healed zone had quite high cyclic fatigue limit at each crack-healing temperature. Thus, Si_3N_4/SiC composite ceramics has crack-healing ability even under cyclic stress of 210MPa at healing temperatures between 900℃ and 1200℃.
