Abstract

CO_2 laser welding was performed at various helium ambient gas pressures and welding speeds to investigate the influence of laser induced the plasma on laser welding phenomenon. The longitudinal sections of the laser welds were compared with the result of a simulation of front-keyhole wall. As a result, the difference of the penetration depth between 1 30 and 10^5 Pa He ambient pressure was observed when the welding speed was 8.3 mm/s. However, little difference was observed at 16.6 mm/s. At 8.3 mm/s, it was found that the penetration depth saturated and the influence of the plasma vanished below 6700 Pa. The penetration depth obtained from the simulation corresponded to that of the actual front keyhole wall.
