Abstract

In this paper, abrasion tests results to evaluate the durability of V-seals to estimate replacement period were shown. The V-seals are fiber reinforced rubber components to seal the mechanical shaft from liquid. First, compression tests of several different sized V-seals were conducted. The results indicated that the size effect of V-seals on mechanical characteristics was little enough to apply scaled down specimen to durability tests. Therefore, a durability test device for scaled down V-seals was developed. The device abrades V-seals by a rotating shaft, and water was circulated in the device to pretend the usage condition by hydraulic power plant. Moreover, leak tests were conducted to evaluate the leaking rates of V-seals before and after the durability tests. In these experiments, torque, rotational speed of the shaft and temperatures of the V-seals and water were measured. From the results, relationships between the variation of the shaft torque and the process of V-seals abrasion were indicated.
