Abstract
This chapter will review the current understanding of disaster and emergency health risk perceptions and preparedness in urban communities. Using case examples and research findings in Asia, this chapter discusses the sociodemographic predictors of disaster risk perception and preparedness. The interaction between health and the science and technology community is analyzed, with a discussion on the implications of science toward application of disaster risk reduction in health. Finally, several global alignments involved in this arena are reviewed.
