Abstract

Although the twin roll casting (TRC) process offers a promising route for the economical production of Mg sheet, its application for commercial-scale magnesium strip production has proven difficult. This chapter explores developments in the TRC process and its use to produce magnesium sheet alloys, providing details of the technology, and its use historically, as well as the complex solidification process and resulting microstructures that occur. Thermodynamic calculations provide a deeper understanding of the complex chemistry of magnesium alloys that will assist in the design of new alloys for TRC and sheet production. Recent advances in TRC process modeling are outlined, providing a quantitative basis for optimizing important process variables to ensure high-quality sheet products.
