Abstract
This chapter looks at the various ways in which monkeys have been transformed since provisioning began. It describes the increase in the monkey population and the resultant tendency of park troops to fission. The chapter examines change in the mobility of the troop. It shows how park troops have withdrawn from much of their former ranges and, in some cases, become isolated from the wider monkey population. The chapter considers whether the various changes associated with provisioning amount to a form of domestication of the monkeys. In particular, it addresses the claim that park monkeys are 'semi-domesticated' rather than 'wild'. The chapter examines provisioning as a kind of cultural transformation of the monkeys. It shows how human control over monkey behaviour exploits the monkeys' capacity for culture, while recognizing the active role played by monkeys in the process of cultural change.Keywords: monkey park; provisioning
