Abstract

Background: The percentage of immature neutrophils (bandemia) has been used as a surrogate marker for inflammatory response. Band neutrophil count greater than 10% of total peripheral white blood counts (WBC) is one of the criteria for Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) as defined by the American Society of Critical Care Medicine. Band level greater than 10% has also been used clinically as an indicator of serious bacterial illness although data demonstrating this association is still unclear.
