Abstract

A man was in analysis. For a while, everything seemed to be going well, but then it bogged down. The patient was frustrated. The analyst was frustrated. neither could find a way to get things going again. It remained like this for quite a while. one day, the analyst said:You know, we’re stuck. Things have plateaued, and we haven’t been able to get back on track. I don’t seem to be able to do anything for you right now. nothing’s being served by my being here. I tell you what. Why don’t you come in each day, lie down on the couch, and speak out loud. I’ll be downstairs in the coffee shop, but I’ll leave a tape-recorder here. At the end of the day, I’ll listen to the tape and hear what you’ve said. When I think I can be useful to you again, I’ll be here instead of the tape-recorder.
